Alternative ideas for presentation of final piece

Before printing out my final outcome for exhibition I considered alternate ideas of presenting my work. this gave me the opportunity to see which which compositions will make my work stand out the most. Below is some rough sketches of ideas on how I intended to experiment presenting my work.

After coming up with a number of compositions I decided to create them digitally on Photoshop with the designs I intended to use. This technique was very useful as I was able to quickly scan through the designs and pick which one I liked, or get opinion from other students.

This design above would be printed out A0 however the piece itself would be slightly smaller due to the narrow overall shape of the design. The spacing between the designs would be approximately 2cm which is enough to clearly separate them giving it a broad boarder. I this this layout is effective as you can recognise that the three strips are completely separate but all compliment each other in making it one piece as a whole.

The design above is again going to be A0 in size. The strips will be a slightly smaller size in comparison to the previous ones due to the larger number of strips. The width between the designs will be slightly smaller, again due to the overall piece being busier and fuller than the previous one. The only problem that might occur in this composition is that it may not appear as eye catching due to it holding so much detail, I think the limited amount of strips might be more successful as you dot have as much to look at all at once.comp 3

The piece above will be printed out in three different sections all sized A1, I chose A1 rather than A0 this time due to  the amount of wall space that it would take up which again could be a problem, A0 would be far too big and it wouldn’t allow much space for other students. however, I do really like this composition as it coveys more of a story or a narrative to the work and allows the observer o follow the work more closely.comp 4

This design above is another piece sized A0, it will appear slightly smaller than the others due to there being no width or boarder between each design. It will also fit nicely in the exhibition because of its size. I do admire the piece without a boarder because it feels as if the piece is just one as a whole, where as sometimes when adding a frame of boarder between each design it can perhaps single out one form another.

The final presentation idea above is sized A0 with a width of 10cm between each strip. This piece would be a lot bigger and taller in size in comparison to all the other designs. I like this arrangement because although the whole piece is one as itself, it also has three different sections that tell their own stories. The only aspect of this composition I can see being problem is that although the designs are effective far apart from each other, they could also seem bit lost and separated which is what I don’t want to suggest, I want all of the designs to compliment and work together.

Evaluation

After finishing A-level I knew I wasn’t ready to go straight to university so by doing a foundation course I was given the opportunity to find my feet and explore my creative skills. From this course I was able to find my strength in Illustration, which has a broad occurrence throughout my time at Blackburn.

A theme of ‘Café Cultures’ has run throughout my final project, which has lead me up to my final piece, consisting of a visual reality of individuals in a variety of atmospheres. When creating my final outcome for exhibition I had to consider what was actually relevant to my theme and how I would represent the varied cultures in cafes, this developed my skills as a working practitioner as I felt as if my work was fully my own and I was extending my skills in developing my thought processes. I first decided that initially I would base my final outcome on my research of individuals in cafes, which involved observational sketches, photographs and written conversations, illustrating the true meaning of scene. When it came to composition I initially wanted to create a book, A5 size, with a range of different pages comparing my research, however, I decided that this wasn’t what I wanted to show in exhibition, and that I wanted something more simple and on a bigger scale so that you can see it without having to look into it like book, and so therefor I then had the idea of creating a ‘comic strip’ like illustration A0 size, which consists of different sections with each one representing a different café within a different location. One section may seem busier and fuller than other sections due to its representation of a lively atmosphere where another part will have limited detail and the simplicity of it signifies a quiet and subtle atmosphere within the café, which subsequently provides the audience with a insight to café cultures.

I was highly influenced with the Comic strip composition idea by an artist named Rupert Smissen, a particular illustration of his involved a similar composition of three strips. The illustrations he had used were observational sketches, which share great similarities with my designs involving the observation of individuals. My initial idea was to create one long illustration, however after looking at Smissen’s work I decided that the piece would look more full and visually appealing. With the designs all blocked together I feel like the piece becomes a narrative and allows the reader to have a better understanding of my work, so this is what I began to work on, trying out different combinations of strips that I had created and fitting them all together. At times this process became difficult as I wanted my final outcome to involve three completely different pieces, however due to creating a number of

Work Plan.

I began to produce a work plan which was just rough notes in my note book, however I felt like this wasn’t working for me so from the 16th March onwards I decided to write out my work plan as a document. Whilst in the studio and having tutorials with Jo it was handy to write down notes using my diary but otherwise I feel a lot more comfortable using a document.

I feel as if it is more organised and that I will notice it more and work alongside it more frequently. I will regularly update it and continue to post it on my blog on this particular page.

Final piece hung in Exhibition.

When printing out my final piece for exhibition I had some thoughts regarding composition and the arrangement of my illustrations. I wanted it to stand out and look as best as possible so I had two options that I could carry out. The first options to slice the 3 sections apart and single them out from one another, but not too much that they are lost from the illustration as a whole, this way the piece would be slightly space out and would appear slightly bigger, filling bit more wall space. The second option was to just keep it as a whole which made it appear more smaller, however this is the option I decided to go for as the piece is initially one illustration and each of the sections accompany each other within making it one piece. There was another option I could go for and that was lining each section next to each other rather than below one another but this wasn’t really  great option as it would take up a large amount of wall space.

Dry-Point printing

I decided to revisit dry point printing which I thoroughly enjoyed in my previous project. I wanted to continue with the overlapping of illustrations so I decided to etch a portrait into my acetate and print on top of one of my digital designs, after experimenting on plain paper first.

A problem I encountered when performing this process was that the paper I had printed my digital designs on was so thin that when I applied water, to break up the fibres allowing the ink to stick more, the paper ripped, so it took a few attempts to get it right.

I think the more successful designs were the ones that held simplicity, some of the more busier digital designs looked too full to then have another illustration on top (the print).
